When you need a crown

A crown is needed when a tooth is too damaged for a filling to restore it — after a fracture, extensive decay, root canal treatment, or years of wear. The crown covers the entire visible tooth, protecting the structure underneath and restoring its shape, strength and appearance.

At Tower Dental, crowns are made from ceramic or porcelain in a dental laboratory — not metal. They are shade-matched to your surrounding teeth so the result looks completely natural. Most patients cannot tell which tooth has the crown.

The process

Two appointments. At the first, your dentist prepares the tooth, takes impressions and fits a temporary crown. At the second (1–2 weeks later), the permanent crown is cemented in place. The preparation is done under local anaesthetic. The fitting appointment is usually painless.

A cracked tooth gets worse: Every time you bite down, the crack extends. What could be fixed with a crown today may fracture beyond repair next month — leading to extraction and a much more complex replacement.

Common questions

Does getting a crown hurt?

The preparation is done under local anaesthetic. You feel pressure, not pain. The temporary crown may feel slightly different for a few days. Fitting the permanent crown is comfortable.

How long do crowns last?

10–15 years on average with good care. Avoid biting very hard objects. Attend regular check-ups so your dentist can monitor the crown.

Crown vs filling?

Fillings replace small areas of damage. Crowns cover the entire tooth when the damage is too extensive for a filling to hold. Your dentist will recommend the most conservative option.
