The silent problem

Gum disease (periodontal disease) begins as gingivitis — red, swollen gums that bleed when you brush. At this stage, it is fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. Left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis — infection that destroys the bone supporting your teeth, eventually causing them to loosen and fall out.

The challenge is that gum disease is usually painless until the advanced stages. Most people do not know they have it. This is why regular hygienist appointments are so important — your hygienist can detect and treat gum disease long before you notice symptoms.

Treatment

Mild gum disease (gingivitis): professional scale and polish to remove tartar, plus guidance on brushing and flossing technique. Usually resolves within 2–4 weeks. Moderate to severe gum disease (periodontitis): a course of deep cleaning (root planing) under local anaesthetic, targeting tartar below the gum line. Follow-up appointments to monitor healing. Ongoing maintenance every 3 months.

Gum disease does not wait: Bone loss from periodontitis is irreversible. Every month without treatment means more bone destroyed and fewer options to save affected teeth. A £67 hygienist appointment today could prevent a £2,380 implant tomorrow.

Common questions

Is gum disease reversible?

Gingivitis (early stage) is fully reversible. Periodontitis (advanced) can be stabilised and managed but bone loss cannot be fully reversed. Early treatment is critical.

My gums bleed — is that gum disease?

Most likely, yes. Healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding when brushing or flossing is the earliest sign of gingivitis. Book a hygienist appointment.

How do I prevent it?

Brush twice daily, floss daily, see your hygienist every 6 months (every 3 if you have a history of gum disease), and do not smoke.
