When extraction is needed

Extraction is a last resort. We always try to save a tooth first — with a filling, crown or root canal. But sometimes a tooth is too damaged, too decayed, or too infected to be restored. Impacted wisdom teeth, teeth fractured below the gum line, and teeth loosened by advanced gum disease may also need extraction.

At Tower Dental, extractions are performed under local anaesthetic. You feel pressure but not pain. Simple extractions take 10–20 minutes. Surgical extractions (impacted or broken teeth) take longer and may involve a small incision in the gum. Your dentist will explain exactly what to expect before starting.

After extraction

You leave with written aftercare instructions. Mild soreness and swelling are normal for 2–3 days — managed with standard painkillers. Avoid hot drinks and vigorous rinsing for 24 hours. Most patients return to normal activities the next day. We will discuss replacement options (implant, bridge or denture) at the same appointment or at a follow-up.

Replace the gap promptly: Adjacent teeth begin drifting within weeks of extraction. The opposing tooth over-erupts. The jawbone shrinks. These changes are gradual but permanent — and they make future treatment more complex and expensive.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

No. Local anaesthetic ensures you feel pressure only. Post-extraction soreness is manageable with paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Should I replace the tooth?

In most cases, yes. A gap allows adjacent teeth to drift and the jawbone to shrink. Your dentist will discuss implants, bridges and dentures.

How long is recovery?

2–3 days of mild soreness. Most patients return to work the next day. The socket heals fully within 2–4 weeks.

"I've not been to the dentist in over 20 years. Being extremely nervous, they were so nice and reassuring."
