Missing one tooth, a few, or all of them?

Eat, talk and smile without thinking about it

A denture fills the gap where teeth used to be. It can replace one tooth, a few teeth or a whole arch. Many people on the Fylde Coast come to us with an old denture that no longer fits, or a gap they have put up with for years. Either way, the first step is the same: we look, we listen, and we write down your options with a price next to each one.

Tower Dental is a private practice on Devonshire Road in Blackpool. We do not make dentures on the NHS. If you want to compare the two routes, read our page on NHS and private dentistry in Blackpool. If you are weighing dentures against implants, see implants vs dentures.

How it works: who dentures are for, the types we make, and what happens at each visit

Who dentures are for

Dentures suit three situations. A partial denture replaces one tooth or a few teeth and clips around the teeth you still have. A full denture replaces every tooth in the upper or lower jaw (one arch). A dual-arch denture replaces both. Dentures are also the usual choice after a tooth extraction when a bridge or implant is not right for you yet, or when you would rather not have surgery.

If you have one or two gaps and strong teeth either side, a fixed dental bridge may be an option instead. Our implants vs bridge page explains the difference.

The types we make

  • Acrylic denture (full or partial). The standard option. Pink acrylic base with acrylic teeth. Easy to adjust and to add a tooth to later if you lose another.
  • Flexi denture. A partial denture made from a thin, flexible material instead of rigid acrylic. It bends slightly as it goes in, and the clasps are gum-coloured rather than metal, so they tend to show less.
  • Chrome (cobalt-chrome) partial denture. A thin metal framework with acrylic teeth and gum. Chrome is slimmer and stronger than acrylic and sits more firmly on your remaining teeth.

Which one suits you depends on how many teeth you have left, the shape of your gums and jaw, and your budget. We go through this with you at the examination.

What happens at each visit

  1. Examination. A new patient examination from £79, X-rays included. We check your gums, your remaining teeth and your bite, and look at any denture you already wear.
  2. Impressions. We take moulds of your mouth. A dental laboratory uses them to build your denture.
  3. Try-in. You try a wax version first. We check the fit, the bite and how the teeth look, and you tell us what you want changed.
  4. Fit. The finished denture is fitted and checked.
  5. Adjustments. New dentures often need small adjustments in the first weeks as your mouth gets used to them.

The number of visits and the adjustment arrangements are confirmed at your examination. We do not make same-day dentures.

Loose dentures, relines, repairs and implant-retained dentures

Why dentures go loose

Gums and jawbone slowly change shape after teeth are removed. A denture that fitted well a few years ago can start to rock, rub or drop. This is normal and it does not mean the denture was badly made.

Relines

A reline adds a new layer to the fitting surface of your existing denture so it matches your gums again. A denture reline is from £196. It is usually the first thing we suggest for a loose denture that is otherwise in good condition.

Repairs

Cracked bases, broken clasps and lost teeth can often be repaired rather than replaced. Bring the denture and any broken pieces with you. We confirm the price at your examination once we have seen the damage.

When a new denture is the better answer

If the teeth are worn flat, the base has been relined several times, or the denture no longer matches your mouth, a new one will usually serve you better than another repair. We will tell you honestly which we think is right.

Implant-retained dentures

A small number of dental implants can hold a denture firmly in place. The denture clips onto the implants and can still be taken out to clean. People who choose this route are usually those whose lower denture will not stay put, or who want to eat a wider range of food with confidence.

Dr San Chatterjee (GDC 84643), who has a special interest in Implantology, assesses whether implants are suitable for you. A single implant and crown is from £2,800; the cost of an implant-retained denture depends on how many implants you need and is confirmed at your examination. We do not have an in-house CBCT scanner, so if a 3D scan is needed we arrange it elsewhere. We do not offer sedation.

Living with dentures: eating, cleaning and sleeping

Eating

Start with soft food cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once. Most people find crusty bread, steak and apples get easier over a few weeks as the muscles of your mouth learn the denture.

Speaking

Some words, especially those with “s” and “f” sounds, can feel odd at first. Reading aloud at home speeds this up.

Cleaning

Take the denture out and clean it over a bowl of water or a folded towel in case you drop it. Use a soft brush and a denture cleaner or plain soap; ordinary toothpaste can scratch the surface. Brush your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth as well. Bring your denture to your routine examinations so we can check the fit and the gums underneath.

Sleeping

We usually advise taking dentures out at night so your gums can rest, and keeping them in water or a cleaning solution so they do not dry out and warp. If you have a reason to wear them at night, tell us and we will advise.

Sore spots

A new denture often rubs in one or two places while it settles. Do not try to file it yourself. Book an adjustment and we will ease the spot.

Your Questions

Dentures — Questions Patients Ask

How much do dentures cost in Blackpool?

At Tower Dental in Blackpool a single-arch acrylic denture is from £1,029.25, a dual-arch denture from £1,652, a flexi denture from £1,100, a chrome denture from £1,132.75 and a denture reline from £196. These are 'from' prices from our published price list. Your own written quote is given at a new patient examination from £79, X-rays included. 0% finance over 6 or 10 months via V12 is available, subject to status. Tower Dental is a credit broker, not a lender.

What is the difference between acrylic, flexi and chrome dentures?

An acrylic denture has a pink plastic base and plastic teeth; it is the standard option for full and partial dentures and is easy to adjust or add teeth to. A flexi denture is a partial denture made from a thin, flexible material with gum-coloured clasps, so it tends to show less and bends slightly as it goes in. A chrome (cobalt-chrome) denture is a partial denture built on a thin metal framework; it is slimmer and stronger than acrylic and sits more firmly on your remaining teeth. At Tower Dental in Blackpool we explain which type suits your mouth at your examination.

How long do dentures last and when do they need relining?

How long a denture lasts depends on how it is cared for and how much your gums change. Gums and jawbone slowly shrink after teeth are removed, so a denture that fitted well can become loose over the years. A reline, from £196 at Tower Dental, adds a new layer to the fitting surface so the denture matches your gums again. If the teeth are worn flat or the denture has been relined several times, a new denture is usually the better answer. We check the fit at your routine examinations and tell you which we recommend.

Will people be able to tell I am wearing dentures?

Modern dentures are made to match the colour and shape of your own teeth and gums, and we check how they look at a try-in stage before the final denture is made. Flexi and chrome partial dentures use clasps that are less visible than the metal clasps on older dentures. How natural a denture looks also depends on the fit, which is why we adjust it after fitting. Results vary from person to person, and we talk through what to expect at your examination at Tower Dental in Blackpool.

Can dentures be held in place by implants?

Yes. An implant-retained denture clips onto a small number of dental implants placed in the jaw, which holds it firmly while still letting you take it out to clean. It is usually considered by people whose lower denture will not stay put. At Tower Dental in Blackpool, Dr San Chatterjee (GDC 84643), who has a special interest in Implantology, assesses whether implants are suitable for you. A single implant and crown is from £2,800; the cost of an implant-retained denture depends on how many implants are needed and is confirmed at your examination.

Do you make dentures on the NHS?

No. Tower Dental in Blackpool is a fully private practice and does not provide NHS treatment, including NHS dentures. All denture prices are published on our price list and you receive a written quote before any work starts. If you want to compare the NHS and private routes, our NHS vs private dentist in Blackpool page explains the differences.

How many appointments does a new denture take?

A new denture at Tower Dental is made over several visits: an examination, impressions, a try-in of a wax version, the fit, and then any adjustments needed as your mouth gets used to it. The exact number of appointments and the adjustment arrangements are confirmed at your examination. We do not make same-day dentures.
