When root canal is needed

Root canal treatment is needed when the soft tissue inside a tooth (the pulp) becomes infected — usually from deep decay, a crack, or trauma. The infection causes pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, and sometimes swelling. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the jawbone and surrounding teeth.

The treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals, fills them with a biocompatible material, and seals the tooth. The tooth is then restored with a filling or crown. The result is a pain-free, functional tooth that can last many years.

What to expect

The treatment is done under local anaesthetic — you will not feel pain during the procedure. Your dentist accesses the pulp chamber through the top of the tooth, removes the infected tissue, cleans and shapes the canals using fine instruments, fills them, and seals the tooth. Most cases are completed in a single appointment of 60–90 minutes. A crown is often recommended afterwards to protect the treated tooth.

Do not wait: An infected tooth does not heal on its own. Painkillers mask the symptom but the infection continues to spread. What could be saved with a root canal today may need extracting next month — followed by an implant at 5x the cost.

Common questions

Does root canal hurt?

No. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic. Most patients say it feels similar to having a filling. The pain you felt before treatment is the infection — the treatment eliminates it.

Is extraction better?

Almost always no. Saving a natural tooth is better for your bite, your jawbone and your long-term dental health. Extraction should be a last resort.

How long does a root-treated tooth last?

With a crown and good hygiene, a root-treated tooth can last a lifetime. Annual check-ups allow your dentist to monitor it.

"I've not been to the dentist in over 20 years. Being extremely nervous, they were so nice and reassuring."
