A dental hygiene appointment is a professional clean. A GDC-registered dental hygienist or therapist carries it out. They take off hardened plaque (calculus), surface staining and bacterial biofilm. Biofilm is the sticky layer of germs that builds up on teeth. They clean above and below the gum line. This is the best way to stop gum disease, tooth loss and bad breath that will not go away. Every adult should have it. How often depends on your own risk. Most patients come every 3 to 6 months. At Tower Dental Blackpool we use ultrasonic scaling. Scaling means scraping off the hard deposits, and the ultrasonic tip does it with fine vibrations. We use hand instruments too. We use Airflow guided biofilm therapy where it will help. You also get personal coaching on cleaning your teeth at home. We chart your gum measurements and write down any areas that need attention. Most appointments last 30 to 45 minutes. Hygiene visits are included in our Adult Plan (from £19.50/month). You can also book one on its own. If you have active periodontitis (gum disease that has spread to the bone), we usually start with a longer course of root surface debridement. That is a deep clean of the tooth roots.
