How long does dental implant treatment take?

The Realistic Timeline for Dental Implant Treatment

Week 1 — Consultation and assessment: Dr Chatterjee goes through your health history and examines your mouth. Where it is needed, we arrange 3D imaging through a trusted imaging partner. That is a low-x-ray dose image. It shows the exact size, density and shape of your bone. This imaging is the base of every treatment plan. You get a full written quote and timeline at this appointment.

Weeks 2–4 — Implant placement: We place the implant in the prepared site under local anaesthetic. It takes 45–90 minutes. Most patients cope afterwards with ibuprofen and paracetamol from the chemist. Bruising and swelling settle within 5–7 days. In suitable cases we can fit a temporary crown straight away.

Weeks 8–16 — Osseointegration: The implant fuses with the jawbone. You wear a temporary tooth and carry on as normal. A check-up at 8 weeks confirms that healing is on track. There is nothing for you to do in this phase. The body does the work.

Weeks 16–20 — Final crown: First we confirm the implant has fused. Then we take digital moulds for your ceramic crown. We fit the permanent crown on to the abutment. Then we check your bite. Your new tooth is complete, and it is designed to look and feel like a natural tooth.

Immediate Implants in Blackpool — Same-Day Tooth Replacement

In the right cases, Tower Dental Blackpool can place a dental implant on the same day as an extraction (having a tooth taken out). We fit a temporary crown at the same visit. This is known as immediate implant placement and immediate loading. It does not suit every case. The bone quality has to be right. The implant has to be stable. Other clinical conditions have to be met. Where it does fit, it cuts the number of appointments and the total treatment time. It also spares you going about without a visible tooth while you heal. Dr Chatterjee checks every extraction case to see whether an immediate implant would work.

Am I suitable for a dental implant?

Chewing on one side. Hiding your smile in photos. A denture that slips when you talk. A bridge that leans on the healthy teeth either side. A missing tooth can chip away at your confidence. Over time it lets the teeth next to it drift. The bone under the gap shrinks back too. You deserve a fixed replacement you can simply forget is there.

A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone. It replaces the root of a missing tooth. It then holds a fixed crown, bridge or denture. So your chewing, your speech and your looks work like your own teeth. Implants suit adults who are missing 1 tooth, several teeth or a full arch. They suit people who want a fixed answer rather than dentures they take out. At Tower Dental Blackpool, Dr San Chatterjee checks and places your implant. He is a dentist with a special interest in Implantology. Treatment normally takes 3 to 6 months, from the first check to the final crown. Implants need enough bone, gum health that is under control, and good general health. If you smoke, we talk you through the risks first. We do the same if your diabetes is not under control. Results vary from patient to patient.

5 Things That Can Affect Implant Success

1. Active gum disease must be fully treated before we place an implant. Bacteria from gum disease can settle on the implant surface. That causes peri-implantitis (an infection around an implant). It leads to bone loss, and the implant can fail. Tower Dental will not place an implant until gum health is stable.

2. Heavy smoking cuts the blood flow to bone. That makes the implant much less likely to fuse. Dr Chatterjee talks about smoking honestly with every implant patient. It is not to judge you. It is to give you a true picture of the outcome, and of how to improve it.

3. Uncontrolled diabetes affects healing and your immune response. Diabetes that is well controlled (HbA1c under 7.5%) does not rule implants out. It does mean we watch things carefully. Dr Chatterjee will speak to your GP where that helps.

4. Bisphosphonate medicines are used to treat osteoporosis (thinning bones). They can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, where jawbone dies back. That is a serious problem. So we check every patient for bisphosphonate use before we consider implant treatment.

5. Too little bone volume can make it impossible to place an implant straight away. You may have had a tooth missing for years. You may have had bad gum disease. Either way the bone may have shrunk back, and you may need a graft. Dr Chatterjee has advanced training in bone grafting. So in most cases we can deal with this at Tower Dental Blackpool, with no hospital referral.

Dental Implants in Blackpool — The Complete 2026 Patient Guide

Dental implant treatment has moved on hugely over the past 20 years. Today's long-term outcomes come from 2 things. One is how good the implant systems now are. The other is the depth of clinical training needed to place them safely and reliably. At Tower Dental Blackpool, implant treatment is led by Dr San Chatterjee (GDC 84643). He is a dentist with a special interest in Implantology. He has completed further training in implant dentistry.

Single Tooth Implants in Blackpool

The most common implant case at Tower Dental Blackpool is a single tooth replacement. One implant holds one crown, and it replaces one missing tooth. This approach is widely used for 2 reasons. It replaces the root as well as the crown, which helps keep the bone in that area. And it does not mean cutting down the healthy teeth either side, as a bridge would. Patients who have had a single tooth implant at Tower Dental often say the same thing. It looks and feels like their natural teeth. You can bite, chew and clean around the implant exactly as you would a natural tooth. That is one of the things patients value most.

Multiple Implants and Full Arch Rehabilitation in Blackpool

Some patients are missing several teeth. For them, Tower Dental Blackpool can provide an implant-supported bridge. That is where 2 or 3 implants hold a bridge of 3 to 5 crowns. Other patients have lost all or most of their teeth. For them we can rebuild a full arch on implants. These bigger cases need careful planning. We use 3D imaging, arranged where needed, to measure bone volume across the jaw. Dr Chatterjee has advanced training in bone grafting. So some patients who were told before that they had too little bone may still be suitable. We confirm that for you at your own assessment. For a £40 implant consultation in Blackpool, call 01253 353759 or visit us at 302a Devonshire Road, Blackpool FY2 0TW.

Real implant cases at Tower Dental

In our practice we place dental implants most often in 3 situations. The first is replacing a single missing tooth. That is usually an upper front tooth lost to trauma, or a lower molar lost to a fracture. The second is supporting a bridge where 2 teeth next to each other are missing. The third is steadying a lower full denture with 2 or 4 implants.

Implant treatment at Tower Dental is led by Dr San Chatterjee (GDC 84643). He is a dentist with a special interest in Implantology. Most of our single-tooth implant patients are aged 45 to 70. They complete treatment over 4 to 6 months. We take a careful approach. Maybe a high-quality bridge or partial denture is the better long-term choice for your case. If so, we will say so.

The Complete Guide to Dental Implants in Blackpool

Losing a tooth is not just about how it looks. Within months of an extraction (having a tooth taken out), the jawbone under the gap starts to shrink. The bone senses it is no longer holding a root, so it gives up density and volume. Over the years that bone loss changes the shape of the face. It also lets the teeth next door drift, and it upsets the bite. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement that passes biting force into the bone. The titanium post carries that force down exactly as a natural root would. This helps keep bone volume in that area.

Everything You Need to Know About Dental Implants in Blackpool

What exactly is a dental implant?

Looking for a dentist in Blackpool for dental implants? A dental implant is a small titanium screw. It is usually 3–5mm wide and 8–16mm long. We place it into the jawbone, where it acts as an artificial tooth root. We use titanium because the body accepts it. Over 8–12 weeks the bone grows around the screw and fuses to it. That is called osseointegration (the bone locking on to the implant). Once it has fused, the implant gives a stable, permanent base. It can hold an artificial tooth (crown), a bridge or a denture. Placed well and looked after well, a dental implant can last for many years.

Osseointegration — The Science Behind Why Implants Work

Dental implants work because of osseointegration (bone growing on to titanium). A Swedish bone surgeon, Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark, found it in the 1950s. He had placed small titanium research chambers in bone. He could not take them out without damaging the tissue around them. The bone had taken the titanium in as part of itself. The first human dental implant followed in 1965. Survival data now spans over 60 years of clinical records.

When a titanium implant goes into the jawbone, bone-building cells (osteoblasts) move to its surface. They start laying new bone mineral straight on to the titanium. The implant surface is made very slightly rough, and treated with chemicals, so those cells grip it well. Over 8–16 weeks new bone grows into that surface. In the end the titanium and the bone form one stable, continuous unit. That is what gives implants their well-recorded long-term stability in the right patients.

We are very proud of that, and we work hard every day to keep it.

How do I look after a dental implant?

Caring for Your Dental Implant — The Long-Term Picture

A dental implant with good care can last for many years. The titanium root has an excellent record. Implants placed by Professor Brånemark's team in the 1960s are still working today. The ceramic crown may need replacing after 15–25 years through normal wear. That is a simple job, and it does not disturb the implant itself.

Daily care is much the same as for a natural tooth. Brush twice a day. Floss every day. Keep up your regular hygienist appointments. We suggest one extra tool: an interdental brush. It is a small bottle-brush shaped cleaner. It keeps the space around the implant crown cleaner than standard floss. At every Tower Dental check-up, Dr Chatterjee measures the gum depth around implants. Where it is needed he also takes radiographs (X-rays) now and then. These confirm bone levels are holding steady. Peri-implantitis caught early can be treated effectively. Left unnoticed, it goes on to cause bone loss. Keeping watch is everything.

What can go wrong with a dental implant?

Dental Implants and Gum Health — What You Must Know

The most important thing before dental implant treatment is gum health. Peri-implantitis is an infection around a dental implant. It is much like gum disease around a natural tooth. It is the leading cause of late implant failure. The risk is far higher in patients with a history of untreated gum disease. At Tower Dental Blackpool, every implant patient has a thorough gum health check before we plan treatment. If there is active gum disease, we treat it first. It must be stable before we consider placing an implant. This is not the commercially easy line to take. It means some patients wait longer for their implant. But it is the clinically correct approach, and it gives much better long-term outcomes.

Patient-First Philosophy at Tower Dental Blackpool

The thinking at Tower Dental is simple. Every clinical decision is made for the patient's long-term good, not for the highest possible income per appointment. That includes the limits, and the upkeep it will need. We do not oversell results.
