Tower Dental Blackpool — Treatment Comparison

Teeth Whitening vs Composite Bonding

Teeth whitening lifts the natural shade of your existing teeth using a peroxide gel. Composite bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to reshape, repair or mask discolouration that whitening cannot reach. They solve different problems — and many patients combine both for the best result.

Teeth Whitening vs Composite Bonding — which is right for me?
Teeth whitening lifts the natural shade of your existing teeth using a peroxide gel. Composite bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to reshape, repair or mask discolouration that whitening cannot reach. They solve different problems — and many patients combine both for the best result. The honest answer is that the right option depends on your specific clinical picture, your priorities and your budget — which is why we always quote in writing after a £40 cosmetic consultation rather than recommending one option in isolation. Frequently Asked Questions

Should I whiten before or after bonding?

Whiten first, always. Composite bonding is colour-matched to your teeth at the appointment — if you whiten afterwards, the bonded areas will not lighten and will become noticeable. Whitening, two-week settle, then bonding to match.

Can I just whiten and skip bonding?

If your only concern is shade and your teeth are otherwise even and well-shaped, yes. If you have chips, gaps or worn edges, whitening alone will not address them — bonding completes the picture.

How much whiter will my teeth get?

Realistic expectations matter. Most patients achieve 2–4 shade improvements on the standard Vita scale. Internal staining (from old root fillings, tetracycline, fluorosis) may not respond — alternative treatments will be discussed if so.

Does whitening damage enamel?

Used at clinical concentrations and durations under dental supervision, no. Over-the-counter and beauty-salon whitening can be a different story. We use Enlighten and Boutique systems with proven safety records.

How long does whitening last?

12–24 months between top-ups for most patients. Coffee, red wine, tea, smoking and curry will shorten that window. Top-up gel is supplied with custom trays after the initial course.

How long does bonding last?

5–7 years for most patients before any refresh or replacement is needed. Polish at hygiene visits keeps it looking fresh. Avoid biting hard objects on bonded edges.

Can I have both treatments together?

Yes — combined whitening + bonding is one of our most common cosmetic plans. The £40 consultation gives you a written treatment sequence and total cost.

What if I have only one or two discoloured teeth?

Internal bleaching (for non-vital teeth that have darkened after a root canal) or single-tooth bonding is usually the right answer rather than whitening the whole mouth. Dr Metias will explain which applies.
