Why teeth yellow

Teeth naturally darken with age as the outer enamel thins and the yellow dentine layer underneath becomes more visible. This process is accelerated by tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco, and certain medications. Some people have naturally more yellow teeth due to genetics — thicker dentine or thinner enamel.

Over-the-counter whitening toothpastes and strips are too weak to produce significant results. They remove surface staining but cannot change the underlying colour of the tooth. Professional whitening uses a significantly higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide — applied safely with custom-made trays under dental supervision.
