Stained Teeth
Treatment
Surface stains from tea, coffee, wine and smoking can be removed with professional whitening or a hygienist clean. Deeper discolouration may need bonding or veneers.
Whitening from £333. Hygienist from £71.
Types of staining
Extrinsic stains sit on the surface of the enamel — caused by tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco, and certain foods. These can be removed with a professional scale and polish and prevented from returning with professional whitening.
Intrinsic stains are within the tooth structure — caused by tetracycline antibiotics taken in childhood, fluorosis, trauma, or age-related darkening. These cannot be removed by cleaning alone. Professional whitening can lighten them significantly. For severe intrinsic staining, composite bonding or porcelain veneers cover the discolouration permanently.
Treatment options
Hygienist clean (from £71) — removes surface tartar and staining. Boutique whitening (from £333) — custom trays with professional-grade gel for home use over 2 weeks. Enlighten whitening (from £499) — guaranteed B1 shade regardless of starting point.
For intrinsic staining: composite bonding (from £333/tooth) covers individual teeth. Porcelain veneers (from £471/tooth) transform the colour, shape and alignment of multiple teeth. Your dentist will recommend the most conservative effective option.
