Knocked-Out
Tooth
A knocked-out adult tooth can sometimes be saved if you act within 30 minutes. Do not scrub the tooth. Place it in milk. Call us immediately.
Emergency fee from £71.
What to do right now
Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part) — never touch the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly under cold water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not scrub it, wrap it in tissue, or let it dry out. If possible, push the tooth gently back into the socket and bite down on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
If you cannot reinsert it, place the tooth in a small container of milk (not water) or hold it inside your cheek against your gum. Time is critical — the ligament cells on the root surface begin to die within 30 minutes. The faster you reach us, the higher the chance of successful reimplantation.
At the practice
Your dentist will clean the socket, reposition the tooth and splint it to the adjacent teeth with a flexible wire. The splint stays in place for 1–2 weeks while the ligament reattaches. Root canal treatment is usually needed within a few weeks, as the nerve rarely survives the trauma.
If the tooth cannot be saved, we discuss replacement options immediately — a dental implant (the most permanent solution), a bridge, or a temporary denture. You will not leave with a visible gap if an immediate temporary can be provided.
