What severe pain means

Constant throbbing pain that keeps you awake at night usually indicates a dental abscess — an infection at the root of the tooth or in the gum. The pain may spread to the jaw, ear or temple. You may notice swelling, a bad taste, or difficulty opening your mouth. This is an active infection that needs urgent treatment.

Sharp, sudden pain when biting may indicate a cracked tooth or a failing restoration. Pain that is triggered by hot food and lingers for minutes suggests the nerve inside the tooth is inflamed (pulpitis). All of these need professional assessment — painkillers mask the symptom but do not treat the cause.

What we do

Examine, X-ray, diagnose. For an abscess: drain the infection, prescribe antibiotics if needed, and begin root canal treatment or extraction. For a cracked tooth: stabilise with a temporary crown and plan definitive treatment. For pulpitis: root canal to remove the inflamed nerve and eliminate the pain.

You leave with the pain resolved or significantly reduced. A clear plan for any follow-up treatment. Written costs before any work begins. We prioritise getting you out of pain — everything else can be planned calmly afterwards.

When to call us

Call immediately. Severe dental pain does not resolve on its own. Infection can spread to surrounding tissues and, in rare cases, become a medical emergency. The sooner you are treated, the simpler the solution.
