Bad Breath
Treatment
Persistent bad breath (halitosis) is usually caused by bacteria — on the tongue, around the gums, or from untreated dental problems. It is treatable. Book a check-up.
Consultation £40. Hygienist from £71.
What causes bad breath?
In 90% of cases, bad breath originates in the mouth — not the stomach. The most common causes are bacteria on the back of the tongue, gum disease (periodontal pockets harbour bacteria that produce sulphur compounds), untreated decay, old or failing dental restorations, and dry mouth.
Less commonly, bad breath can be caused by tonsil stones, sinus infections, acid reflux, or certain medications that reduce saliva flow. A dental check-up identifies or rules out oral causes. If no dental cause is found, your dentist may recommend seeing your GP.
How we treat it
A thorough examination identifies the source. If gum disease is the cause, a professional scale and polish removes the tartar and bacteria responsible. If decay is present, it is treated. Your hygienist will demonstrate effective tongue cleaning and recommend an appropriate mouthwash.
For patients with chronic halitosis related to gum disease, our Periodontal Membership Plan (from £25.99/month) includes quarterly hygienist visits to keep bacteria under control. Most patients notice a significant improvement after a single professional cleaning.
When to call us
Book a check-up if bad breath persists despite good brushing and flossing. It is a medical symptom, not a hygiene failure — and it is almost always fixable once the cause is identified.
