What is gum contouring?

Gum contouring (also called gum reshaping or gingivectomy) is a cosmetic procedure that adjusts the shape of your gum line. If you feel your teeth look too short, or that too much gum shows when you smile (a "gummy smile"), contouring removes the excess gum tissue to reveal more of the tooth underneath.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic using either a scalpel or a dental laser. It is usually completed in a single appointment. Recovery is quick — mild soreness for a few days, with full healing in 1–2 weeks. The result is a more balanced, proportionate smile.

Is it right for you?

Gum contouring is most effective when the issue is genuinely excess gum tissue rather than short teeth. Your dentist will assess whether contouring alone will achieve the result you want, or whether it should be combined with veneers or bonding for maximum impact.
