Receding Gums
Treatment in Blackpool
Gum recession doesn't reverse on its own — but it can almost always be stopped. Assessment, professional cleaning and a plan that protects what you have.
What gum recession is
Receding gums means the gum margin has pulled back, exposing more of the tooth and sometimes the root surface. Common signs: teeth looking longer, sensitivity to cold, notches at the gumline, and gaps appearing at the base of the teeth.

Receding Gums — Causes & What Can Be Done
The two big causes
Most recession comes from one of two opposites: gum disease (bacteria destroying the supporting tissues) or over-brushing (scrubbing too hard with a stiff brush, literally wearing the gum away). Grinding, smoking, and tooth position also contribute. Identifying which applies to you matters, because the treatments are different — one needs more cleaning, the other needs gentler cleaning.
The honest part: lost gum doesn't grow back
Receded gum tissue does not regenerate by itself, and no toothpaste regrows gums regardless of the advertising. What treatment does — reliably — is stop the recession progressing, eliminate the sensitivity, and protect the exposed root surfaces from decay and wear. In selected cases, gum grafting surgery can cover exposed roots; where that's appropriate we'll discuss referral honestly.
What treatment looks like
First, a full periodontal assessment with pocket measurements and X-rays where needed — that's part of the £79 examination. If gum disease is the driver, professional cleaning above and below the gumline (hygienist £84, deeper periodontal therapy quoted in writing) removes the cause. If brushing technique is the driver, we'll retrain it — softer brush, lighter pressure, better angles. Sensitivity is managed with fluoride varnish and bonding over exposed roots where needed.
Keeping it stopped
Stabilised gums stay stable with maintenance. Our periodontal plan is £24.99/month and is built around the more frequent professional cleaning that gum disease patients genuinely need — typically every three months rather than six.
When sensitivity is the main complaint
Exposed root surfaces respond well to desensitising treatments, fluoride applications, and where notching is significant, composite bonding (from £168 as a filling-type repair) to cover the worn area.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can receding gums grow back?
No — lost gum tissue doesn't regenerate, and no toothpaste changes that. Treatment stops recession progressing and resolves sensitivity; surgical grafting can cover roots in selected cases.
What causes gums to recede?
Most commonly gum disease or over-brushing — opposite problems with different fixes. Grinding, smoking and tooth position also contribute. The assessment identifies which applies to you.
