Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening lifts the natural shade of teeth using a peroxide-based gel applied at clinical concentrations under dental supervision. It is one …
What we see at Tower Dental Blackpool
At our Blackpool practice, professional at-home tray whitening is by far the most popular option — we provide it for around 9 out of 10 whitening cases, with in-practice whitening reserved for specific time-pressured cases. Most patients achieve 2–4 shade improvements on the standard Vita scale within 2–3 weeks of nightly tray wear; sensitivity is reported by approximately 1 in 4 patients but resolves within hours of stopping each session and rarely requires the course to be paused.
The single most common reason for whitening underperforming expectation in our patient base is intrinsic tetracycline staining from antibiotics taken in childhood. We identify this at consultation by examining the staining pattern (banding rather than even discolouration) and set realistic expectations — sometimes recommending veneers for the front teeth as a more predictable solution. We do not start whitening on cases where we cannot achieve a meaningful improvement.
For patients combining whitening with bonding or veneers, we always whiten first and wait 2 weeks before any cosmetic restoration so the shade match is taken from the lightened result. Patients who proceed with bonding before whitening and try to whiten afterwards consistently see uneven results because the existing composite does not lighten.

What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening uses a hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel that breaks down stain molecules within the tooth structure, lifting the natural shade by several levels on the standard Vita scale. Whitening does not remove enamel; it bleaches the tooth from within, oxidising chromogenic compounds that have accumulated over years of coffee, tea, red wine, smoking and ageing.
Whitening is regulated in the UK: only a GDC-registered dentist (or dental therapist working under prescription) is legally permitted to provide whitening using gels above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. Beauty salons and "whitening kiosks" cannot legally provide the concentrations needed for genuine professional results.
Who is teeth whitening suitable for?
Whitening suits most patients with healthy teeth and gums who want to improve their natural shade — typically caused by extrinsic staining from coffee, tea, red wine, curry, smoking and ageing.
Whitening is less effective for: intrinsic staining from tetracycline antibiotics taken in childhood (limited response), severe fluorosis (mottled patterns may persist), single-tooth darkening from previous trauma or root canal (internal bleaching may help, otherwise consider a veneer or crown), and patients with extensive composite restorations on front teeth (the existing fillings will not lighten and will need replacement after whitening to match).
Whitening is not done during pregnancy or breastfeeding (precautionary), in patients under 18 except for specific medical reasons, or in patients with active gum disease until it is treated.
Treatment options
At-home tray whitening (most popular): Custom-fit trays are made for your teeth (digital scan, 1 week), and supplied with a course of professional-strength gel. You wear the trays at home for 30 minutes a day or overnight (depending on the gel) for 2–3 weeks. Easy, predictable, lower sensitivity than in-practice options. Tray gel can also be used for top-ups for years afterwards.
In-practice whitening (rarely used solo at Tower Dental): A higher concentration gel applied in the dental chair under controlled conditions, sometimes with an activating light. Faster (1–2 hours in chair), useful where time pressure exists, but sensitivity is more pronounced and the result still benefits from at-home top-up.
Combination whitening: In-practice session followed by at-home tray top-ups. Used where maximum lift is desired and time allows.
Internal (single-tooth) bleaching: For non-vital teeth that have darkened after a root canal. Bleaching gel is sealed inside the tooth for several days and replaced as needed.
Costs and finance
Teeth whitening at Tower Dental Blackpool starts from £333 for at-home tray whitening (includes consultation, custom trays, professional gel and a top-up gel for later). In-practice options are quoted separately. The treatment is offered as a stand-alone option or as a sequenced first step before bonding or veneers (whitening always comes first to ensure shade match).
Plan members receive 15% off treatment. Whitening does not typically require finance because the cost is modest, but 0% finance is available on combined cosmetic plans subject to status.
Risks and limitations
Sensitivity (the most common side effect): some patients experience cold sensitivity or sharp shooting pains during whitening. This is normal, usually mild, and resolves within hours of stopping. Sensitive toothpaste used for 2 weeks before whitening reduces it markedly. Severe sensitivity is rare and is a reason to pause or reduce gel concentration.
Gum irritation if the gel touches gum tissue (custom trays minimise this; over-the-counter strip products do not). Uneven results if patient compliance with wear time is patchy. Whitening does not lighten existing fillings, crowns, veneers or bonding — these may need replacement to match the new shade.
Beauty salon and over-the-counter "whitening" products at the legal-for-non-dentist concentration of 0.1% hydrogen peroxide cannot achieve clinical-grade results. Be cautious of any "whitening" not provided by a GDC-registered professional.
How long do teeth whitening results last?
12–24 months between top-ups for most patients, depending on lifestyle. Coffee, red wine, tea and smoking are the main causes of relapse. Top-up gel used in the original trays for 2–3 nights every 6–12 months keeps the result stable indefinitely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will whitening damage my enamel?
No — when used at clinical concentrations under dental supervision, peroxide-based whitening does not damage enamel. The gel works by oxidising stain molecules without etching or weakening the tooth surface. Decades of clinical use and research support this.
How white will my teeth get?
Realistic expectations matter. Most patients achieve 2–4 shade improvements on the standard Vita scale. Internal staining (tetracycline, fluorosis) responds less. We discuss realistic outcomes for your specific starting shade at consultation.
Can I whiten my crowns or veneers?
No — peroxide does not lighten porcelain or composite. If you have visible front-tooth restorations, whiten your natural teeth first, then we replace any restorations to match the new shade.
Should I whiten before or after bonding/veneers?
Always before. Whitening lifts the natural tooth shade; the cosmetic restoration is then colour-matched to the lightened result. Whitening after restorations creates a mismatch.
How often can I do whitening?
Once you have completed an initial course, top-up gel for 2–3 nights every 6–12 months is generally safe and effective. Continuous daily whitening is not recommended.
Is salon whitening legal?
In the UK, whitening with gels above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide is restricted by law to GDC-registered dentists (or dental therapists working under prescription). Beauty salons offering "whitening" are usually using legal-but-low-strength products that do not produce clinical results.
