Types of crack

Craze lines are tiny surface cracks in the enamel — common, painless, and usually harmless. A fractured cusp is when a piece of the chewing surface breaks off — painful but repairable with a crown. A crack extending below the gum line is more serious and may require root canal treatment before a crown.

The most concerning type is a vertical root fracture — a crack that starts at the root and extends upward. These are often painless initially but can cause infection. A split tooth, where the crack divides the tooth into two segments, usually requires extraction. The sooner a crack is diagnosed, the more treatment options remain available.

How we treat it

Your dentist examines the tooth, takes an X-ray, and may use a bite test to identify the crack location. Treatment depends on the type and extent: bonding for minor cracks, a crown for fractured cusps, root canal plus crown for cracks reaching the nerve, or extraction for vertical root fractures.

A crown is the most common treatment — it covers the entire tooth and holds it together, preventing the crack from worsening. At Tower Dental, crowns are made from ceramic, shade-matched to your surrounding teeth, and typically completed in two appointments.

When to call us

Call if you feel sharp pain when biting, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, or pain that comes and goes. These are classic signs of a cracked tooth. Do not wait — an untreated crack gets worse, and what could have been saved with a crown may eventually need extraction.
