Night Guards for Grinding — Custom vs Shop-Bought
Why bother with a night guard?
Grinding (bruxism) generates forces far beyond normal chewing, and it happens for hours while you're unaware. The damage is cumulative and one-way: flattened tooth edges, cracked fillings and cusps, sensitivity, jaw and ear pain, morning headaches. Enamel doesn't grow back — a guard is cheap insurance compared with the crowns (from £672) that destroyed teeth eventually need.
Custom vs boil-and-bite
Pharmacy boil-and-bite guards cost less upfront but are bulky, fit loosely, often get spat out at night, and wear through quickly. A laboratory-made guard from accurate impressions fits precisely, is slim enough to sleep in comfortably, distributes force evenly across the bite, and lasts years. The honest summary: the cheap one only works if you wear it, and most people don't.
Signs you're grinding
Your partner hears it; you wake with aching jaw muscles, temple headaches or sensitive teeth; your dentist sees flattened, chipped edges and wear facets. Daytime clenching at a desk counts too — many people do both.
The process
Visit one: examination of your bite and wear pattern, then impressions or a digital scan. The laboratory makes your guard. Visit two: fitting and adjustment so the bite contacts are even. You'll get cleaning and storage advice — a guard lasts much longer when it's rinsed, brushed and kept dry in its case.
Treating the cause
A guard protects teeth; it doesn't always stop the habit. Stress, sleep quality, caffeine and some medications all feed bruxism. Where jaw joint symptoms are significant we'll assess properly rather than just selling you plastic.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a night guard at the dentist in Blackpool?
From £280 at Tower Dental — laboratory-made from impressions of your teeth, fitted and adjusted by the dentist.
Are pharmacy night guards any good?
As a short-term test, maybe. They're bulky and loose-fitting, so most people stop wearing them within weeks — which makes them poor value despite the low price.
