Dental Crowns — Costs, Materials & Process

When a crown is the right call

A crown protects a tooth that's too damaged for a filling: large fractures, root-treated teeth, heavily filled teeth that keep breaking. A filling repairs part of a tooth; a crown holds the whole tooth together under biting force. If a large filling on a back tooth keeps failing, a crown usually ends the cycle.

What's included in the price

The fee covers shaping the tooth, the impression or digital scan, a laboratory-made crown matched to your shade, a temporary crown to wear between visits, and the final fitting and bite adjustment. There are no separate lab fees added afterwards — the written quote is the full price.

Material choices

Porcelain and ceramic crowns (from £739) give the most natural appearance and are the usual choice for visible teeth. We'll recommend the material that suits the tooth's position and your bite — strength matters more at the back, appearance more at the front.

The two-visit process

Visit one: the tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic, scanned or impressed, and fitted with a temporary crown. The laboratory then makes your crown. Visit two: the temporary comes off, the new crown is checked for fit, contact and bite, and cemented permanently.

How long crowns last

With good hygiene and regular check-ups, well-made crowns commonly last many years — the biggest threats are gum disease and decay at the crown margin, both preventable with home care and hygienist visits (£84). Grinders should consider a night guard (£280) to protect the investment.

No — the tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic. Some sensitivity for a few days after each visit is normal and settles.
Different jobs. Fillings repair small to medium cavities; crowns protect structurally weakened teeth. If a tooth keeps fracturing around a large filling, a crown is usually the longer-lasting answer.
