How a bridge works

A dental bridge literally bridges the gap left by a missing tooth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) held in place by crowns fitted onto the teeth on either side of the gap. The result is a fixed restoration that looks and functions like natural teeth.

Bridges are a good option for patients who want a fixed tooth replacement without surgery. Unlike implants, bridges do not require a titanium post to be placed in the jawbone. However, the adjacent teeth need to be filed down to support the crowns — which is a permanent change. Your dentist will explain the trade-offs honestly.

Bridge vs implant

Bridges are less expensive upfront (from £1,451 vs £2,380 for an implant) and require no surgery. Implants last longer (lifetime vs 10–15 years), preserve bone, and do not affect adjacent teeth. For most patients with adequate bone, an implant is the better long-term investment. For patients who are not suitable for surgery or prefer a non-surgical option, a bridge is an excellent alternative.

Common questions

How long does a bridge last?

10–15 years with proper care. Keep the area clean with floss threaders or interdental brushes. Regular check-ups allow your dentist to catch any issues early.

Does the procedure hurt?

The adjacent teeth are prepared under local anaesthetic. Temporary bridge fitted while the permanent one is being made. Fitting the final bridge is painless.

Can I eat normally?

Yes. Once cemented, a bridge withstands normal chewing forces. Avoid very hard or sticky foods in the first 24 hours.
