Broken Tooth
Emergency
A broken tooth needs prompt treatment to prevent further damage and infection. Call us as early as possible — we aim to see emergencies the same day.
Emergency fee from £71. Plan members: no charge.
What to do right now
If the tooth has broken, collect any fragments and store them in milk or saliva (not water). Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water. If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth. Take paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain. Avoid eating on the affected side.
Do not attempt to file sharp edges yourself — you risk further damage. If a large section has broken off and you can see pink or red tissue inside the tooth, this is the nerve and requires urgent treatment. Call 01253 353759 immediately.
How we repair broken teeth
Treatment depends on the severity. A small chip can be repaired with composite bonding in a single appointment — the resin is shaped and polished to match your natural tooth. A larger break may need a dental crown to restore the tooth's full shape and strength. If the break has exposed the nerve, root canal treatment may be needed first.
In cases where the tooth is fractured below the gum line or split vertically, extraction may be the only option. If so, we discuss replacement options (implant, bridge or denture) at the same appointment. You receive a written treatment plan with costs before any work begins.
When to call us
Call as soon as the tooth breaks. Even if there is no pain, a broken tooth is vulnerable to infection and further fracture. The sooner it is assessed, the more treatment options remain available.
