Patient concern

A patient in their early 50s lost an upper front tooth following a failed root canal and prolonged infection some years previously. They had been wearing a removable partial denture which was uncomfortable and gave them confidence problems. They had ruled out a bridge because it would have required cutting healthy enamel from the adjacent teeth. They wanted a permanent, fixed solution that looked natural in conversation and photographs.

Treatment provided

Initial consultation with Dr San Chatterjee included a 3D cone-beam CT (CBCT) scan to assess the bone volume at the missing-tooth site. Bone height was sufficient but width was borderline, so a small bone graft was planned alongside implant placement. Surgery: under local anaesthetic, a Straumann implant fixture was placed and a small graft of synthetic bone material was packed around it to optimise width. The temporary partial denture was modified to fit over the healing site. After 4 months of integration, a final impression was taken and a custom porcelain crown was made in our laboratory. The crown was cemented onto the implant abutment at a 30-minute appointment. Total cost: £2,380 for the implant fixture + crown, plus £450 for the bone graft. £40 consultation refunded against treatment.

Timescale

Total time from consultation to fitted crown: 5 months (consultation 1 week, surgery 1 week later, 4 months integration, crown made and fitted in week 18). Patient discharged with a long-term hygiene plan to support implant longevity.
