When you need a crown

A crown is recommended when a tooth is too damaged for a filling — after extensive decay, a fracture, root canal treatment, or years of wear. It covers the entire visible tooth, restoring shape, strength and appearance.

Not every damaged tooth needs a crown. If a filling or bonding can restore the tooth adequately, your dentist will recommend the simpler option. We always choose the most conservative effective treatment.
