Composite vs porcelain — what is the difference?

Composite veneers are applied directly to the tooth in a single appointment. The dentist sculpts resin by hand, building up colour, shape and symmetry. No lab required. No tooth preparation in most cases. Fully reversible. Last 5–7 years.

Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory from impressions of your teeth. They are thinner, stronger, more stain-resistant and last 10–15 years. However, they require a thin layer of enamel to be removed (irreversible) and need two appointments. For patients who want the most durable, natural-looking result, porcelain is the premium option.

Which should you choose?

Composite for: minor chips, small gaps, slight discolouration, trying cosmetic dentistry for the first time, budget-conscious patients. Porcelain for: significant colour or shape changes, long-term durability, patients who want the highest aesthetic quality.

Many patients start with composite bonding and upgrade to porcelain later. Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate option at consultation — if composite will achieve your goal, we say so. No upselling.
