Why Patients Choose Sedation at Tower Dental Blackpool

For some patients, the standard anxiety-management approach used at Tower Dental — slow pacing, agreed stop signals, noise-cancelling headphones, topical anaesthetic before every injection, and a clinician who never rushes — is enough to take them comfortably through any procedure. For others, particularly patients who have avoided the dentist for many years, patients with severe needle phobia, patients facing surgical extractions or implant placement, or patients with a strong gag reflex, additional pharmacological support is the right answer.

Sedation dentistry is not a single technique. It is a spectrum, and the right option for you depends on three things: your medical history (some sedation routes are not safe for patients with certain conditions), the length and complexity of the dental work being planned, and your personal preference. Dr Sarah Metias (GDC 114267, MJDF RCS England) carries out the suitability assessment at your consultation. Where IV sedation is required for implant or surgical work, treatment is co-ordinated with Dr San Chatterjee (GDC 84643, MID RCS Edinburgh) and a sedation-trained colleague.

There is no judgement at Tower Dental about needing sedation. Many of our most loyal patients are people who came to us after years away from any dentist, and who are now seen comfortably for routine examinations because the sedation pathway gave them a way back into care. That is exactly what sedation dentistry exists for.

Sedation Options at Tower Dental Blackpool

Four levels — agreed at consultation based on your suitability and the treatment planned

Tier 1

Standard Anxiety Management

No medication. Slow pacing, agreed stop signal, headphones, topical anaesthetic before every injection, ceiling-mounted distraction screen, weighted blanket on request.

Included with every appointment · No additional fee
Tier 2

Oral Sedation

Prescribed tablet taken before your appointment. You feel relaxed and detached but remain awake. Useful for moderate anxiety and longer appointments. Needle-free at the outset.

Quoted in writing at consultation · Escort home required
Tier 3

Inhalation Sedation

Nitrous oxide or Penthrox inhaled through a small mask. Onset is rapid, recovery is fast, and the depth is adjustable in real time. Suitable for needle-phobic and gag-reflex patients.

Tier 4

IV Sedation

Midazolam delivered intravenously by a sedation-trained colleague. You remain conscious and responsive but deeply relaxed; most patients remember little of the procedure. Ideal for implants and surgical extractions.

⚕️ Clinical Suitability & Risks

Honest Information About Sedation Risk

Sedation in a properly equipped dental setting is very safe, but it is not risk-free, and it is not suitable for every patient. We give you the facts in full at consultation so that you can make an informed decision.

Suitable for sedation

Most adults in good general health, including patients with mild to moderate anxiety, needle phobia, strong gag reflex, complex restorative or implant work planned, or a long history of dental avoidance.

May be unsuitable or require referral to a hospital sedation service

Pregnancy, severe respiratory disease (including poorly controlled asthma or COPD), significant cardiac disease, severe hepatic or renal impairment, certain neurological or psychiatric conditions, sleep apnoea, ASA grade III–IV, BMI > 35, or known allergy to sedative agents. We will not proceed with sedation where it is not appropriate.

Risks you need to know about

Common, usually mild and short-lived: drowsiness, light-headedness, mild nausea, transient amnesia for the procedure (often welcomed), slight reduction in blood pressure, slight reduction in respiratory rate. Rare: paradoxical agitation, hiccups, prolonged drowsiness, allergic reaction. Very rare: significant respiratory depression — this is why oxygen, monitoring equipment and reversal agents are present throughout, and why a sedation-trained clinician supervises every IV case.

After sedation

Do not drive, operate machinery, sign legal documents or drink alcohol for at least 24 hours. A responsible adult must escort you home and ideally remain with you for the rest of the day. Full written aftercare instructions are provided before treatment.

💷 Pricing

Sedation Pricing — Transparent and Quoted in Writing

Sedation pricing depends on the type chosen, the length of the procedure and whether a sedation-trained colleague is required. For that reason every patient receives a written quote at consultation rather than a one-size-fits-all price online. The figures below are accurate starting points so you know what to expect.
