Toothache
Treatment
Toothache means something is wrong — decay, infection, a crack, or gum disease. Do not wait for it to get worse. Call us and we will see you the same day.
Emergency fee from £71. Plan members: no charge.
What causes toothache?
The most common cause is dental decay — bacteria have eaten through the enamel and reached the sensitive inner layers of the tooth. Other causes include a cracked or fractured tooth, an abscess (infection at the root), gum disease, an exposed root surface, or a failed filling.
The severity of the pain does not always match the severity of the problem. A mild ache can indicate advanced decay. A sharp, sudden pain may be a crack. Constant throbbing, especially at night, often suggests infection. All toothache should be assessed — ignoring it risks the problem escalating into something more complex and more expensive to treat.
How we treat it
We examine the tooth, take an X-ray to identify the cause, and provide immediate pain relief. Treatment depends on the diagnosis: a filling if the tooth is decayed, root canal treatment if the nerve is infected, extraction if the tooth cannot be saved, or antibiotics if there is an active abscess.
Most toothache appointments take 30–60 minutes. You leave with the pain resolved or significantly reduced, and a clear plan for any further treatment needed. Everything is explained before we start. A written quote is provided for any follow-up work.
When to call us
Call as soon as the pain starts. Early treatment is simpler and cheaper than waiting. If the pain wakes you at night, is accompanied by swelling, or does not respond to painkillers, call first thing in the morning — these are signs of infection that need urgent attention.
