How Painful Are
Dental Implants?

The honest answer: less painful than most patients expect. The placement is done under local anaesthetic. Recovery discomfort is manageable with standard painkillers.

During the procedure

Implant placement is performed under local anaesthetic — the same anaesthetic used for a filling. You will not feel pain during the procedure. You may feel pressure and vibration as the implant is placed into the jawbone, but no sharp or cutting sensation. Most single-implant placements take 30–60 minutes.

Patients who are particularly anxious can discuss sedation options with Dr Chatterjee at their consultation. However, the majority of our implant patients say the procedure was significantly less uncomfortable than they anticipated — many describe it as easier than having a tooth extracted.

After the procedure

Post-operative discomfort typically peaks on day 2 and subsides by day 5. Most patients describe it as a dull ache — comparable to a bruise, not a toothache. Paracetamol and ibuprofen taken together are usually sufficient. Ice packs reduce swelling in the first 24 hours.

Most patients return to work the next day. You should avoid hard food on the implant site for 1–2 weeks and follow the aftercare instructions provided. Your dentist will check the site at a review appointment and address any concerns.

What patients actually say

The most common feedback we hear is "I wish I had done it sooner." Fear of pain is the #1 reason patients delay implant treatment — and almost universally, the reality is far less uncomfortable than the expectation. The anticipation is worse than the experience.

If you are considering implants but worried about pain, speak to Dr Chatterjee at your consultation. He will explain exactly what to expect at each stage, answer every question honestly, and never pressure you to proceed. The consultation itself involves no pain — just conversation and an X-ray.
