Why dentures become loose

After tooth extraction, the jawbone gradually resorbs — losing volume over time. A denture that fitted well five years ago no longer sits on the same ridge shape. The result is movement, soreness, difficulty eating, and the embarrassment of a denture that slips at the wrong moment.

Loose dentures are not just uncomfortable — they accelerate bone loss by placing uneven pressure on the remaining ridge. The longer you tolerate a poor fit, the harder it becomes to achieve a stable fit with a replacement.

Your options

Reline — a new acrylic layer is added to the fitting surface of your existing denture to match the current shape of your ridge. This extends the life of the denture by 2–3 years. A new denture — if the current one is worn or the teeth are damaged, a new custom denture provides the best fit and appearance.

Implant-retained dentures — the most stable solution. Two to four implants are placed in the jawbone and the denture clips onto them. The denture does not move, does not need adhesive, and restores near-full biting force. Dr Chatterjee can assess your suitability at consultation.
